One Sofa

The one sofa we think you should own is the Fritz Hansen Series 3300 sofa.

Published on 13 Jan 2025

A sofa is the heart of the modern home—a place to relax, connect, and unwind. Beyond its practical function, a well-designed sofa anchors your living space, offering comfort and style that reflects your personality. Whether you’re entertaining guests or enjoying quiet moments, the right sofa enhances your home’s atmosphere and becomes a cornerstone of daily life.

The one sofa we think you should own is the Fritz Hansen Series 3300 sofa.

Series 3300 Sofa

The Series 3300 lounge chair and sofa, designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1956, represents a departure from the organic shapes often seen in his earlier works, opting instead for a refined, architectural approach. Characterised by straight lines and oblique angles, the design of Series 3300 reflects Jacobsen’s architectural sensibilities from this period, creating a visual connection to his larger structural works of the mid-20th century.

Originally launched by Fritz Hansen, Series 3300 includes a lounge chair and a modular sofa available in two-, three-, and four-seater configurations. Jacobsen envisioned this collection not only for private homes but also as a versatile addition to public interiors. In its debut year, the series was featured in the interior design of Rødovre Town Hall, establishing a welcoming yet modern aesthetic in the space. Soon after, it became part of the iconic SAS Royal Hotel (now the Radisson Collection Royal Hotel) in Copenhagen, earning the collection its cosmopolitan nickname, the “Airport Series.”

The sofa’s design highlights Jacobsen’s innovative use of modular construction. The contrast between the sleek steel frame and the padded seating lends Series 3300 a light, floating expression while also showcasing Jacobsen’s commitment to functional elegance. The modular design allows for seamless scalability, adapting effortlessly to different spaces and needs. Series 3300 remains a timeless classic, offering a sophisticated blend of style and practicality that fits effortlessly into both contemporary and mid-century interiors.

Another option to think about is the Suita range, designed by Antonio Citterio, 2010/2019 and available from Vitra. We like the 2-Seater Classic.
